There are numerous characters that carry on the traditions or legacies of characters from past games without understanding the full truth of what that legacy entails. It's all an exercise in futility.Ī small theme in Dark Souls 3 is the many forms that heirship and legacies take how legends are another way to live after you have died. The old gods eventually die, the world goes dark, and eventually new gods will rise in their place, over and over, forever. There's no moral high ground, and in time, whether it be in a hundred years or a thousand or a million, the exact same problem will face someone else long after your character has gone to dust and ash.

But really, the message I got, especially from 3, is that it doesn't matter. I actually have to wonder if the big cycle of the game isn't at least partially inspired by Wagner's Ring Cycle. And eventually, a new flame will rise in the dark, and with it new gods who will probably also link the flame to continue the new age of fire. Eventually the dark will come, as the flame weakens, or as someone snuffs it out. It doesn't matter what you do or don't do. The flame is linked over and over and over and over. Nothing you do in the first two games matters, and probably not the third either. I've always seen it as a theme of nihilism.
